A-State Tennis Heads to Memphis for ITA Central Regionals

JONESBORO, Ark. (10/8/24) – Arkansas State women's tennis returns to action on Wednesday, beginning play at the ITA Central Regional Championships, held Oct. 9-14 in Memphis, Tenn.

All matches will be played at the Leftwich Tennis Center with singles qualifying beginning Wednesday.

"This is the biggest tournament of the fall season with all of the best teams in our region participating," head coach Sujay Lama said. "It's a tremendous opportunity to see where we stand but also to get some good wins that could do wonders for our confidence. We have players that are capable of making a run if we play fearless tennis."

New this season, singles finalists and doubles champions at each of the 13 ITA Regional Championships earn automatic bids to the NCAA Individual Championships, held Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas.

Three Red Wolves – Lily Cvanciger, Sarah Millard and Carla Muro Castellvi – will compete in singles qualifying, needing to win two matches to reach the main draw. Millard will take the court first on Wednesday, taking on Iowa's Nikita Vishwase at 9 a.m. Muro Castellvi and Cvanciger will play at 10:45 a.m. against Lilitha Ndungane and Jimena Gomez, both of Arkansas. Should any of those three advance out of qualifying, they will join sophomore Anna Grigoreva in the main draw.

Also on Thursday, three players will open up play in the Singles 'B' Draw at 4:15 p.m. Ariadna Fernandez will face Cassie Cervantes of Oral Roberts, while Abigail Thurmer takes on Missouri's Sarah Hartel. Loles Carbo Chova is also in the draw, facing Annelise Deer of ORU.

The doubles main draw will feature a trio of A-State pairs. Grigoreva will team up with Cvanciger, while Millard and Muro Castellvi will compete as a duo. Rounding out the doubles pairs are Fernandez and Thurmer.
