A-State Demolishes Mississippi Valley State in Record-Breaking Night, 114-54

JONESBORO, Ark. (11/13/24) – Arkansas State women's basketball (2-1, 0-0 SBC) drained a school record 20 three-pointers to secure a 114-54 victory over Mississippi Valley State (0-3, 0-0 SWAC) on Wednesday night at First National Bank Arena.
 
Kennedie Montue led the team with a career high 26 points on 7-for-9 (77.8 percent) shooting from beyond the arc, tying for the fourth most triples in program history. Zyion Shannon was not far behind with 22, as the Scarlet and Black tallied five double-digit scorers for the second consecutive game.
 
As a team A-State shot 40-for-79 (50.6 percent) from the floor with 29 assists, second most in school history, along with 20-for-41 (48.8 percent) shooting from three-point range. The Delta Devils were outscored 28-2 off fast breaks and 47-8 in points off turnovers.
 
On the defensive side, the Scarlet and Black forced 32 turnovers and notched 20 steals, with the latter tying for the sixth most in a game in school history.
 
The Red Wolves were outrebounded 48-41, with their opponents bringing down 20 boards on the offensive glass.
 
A-State held their opponents scoreless until the 6:37 mark in the first quarter and opened the contest on a 9-3 run thanks to a pair of treys from Shannon and Montue. The lead grew to 13 with 3:41 remaining, but the Delta Devils were able to cut it to a 24-17 advantage by the end of the period.
 
Montue and Mimi McCollister brought the lead back to 10 with a free throw and layup before a 16-0 run blew the contest open. Montue, Shannon, and Bella Weary all drained a triple during the stretch as the score stood at 45-21.
 
Another pair of triples fell before time expired as A-State finished the second with six treys to make the score 54-27 going into halftime.
 
A cold start to the second half allowed Mississippi Valley State to score five of the first six points in the quarter. Reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Crislyn Rose scored A-State's first field goal of the period at the 5:01 mark.
 
The Red Wolves outscored the Delta Devils 22-12 beyond that point, taking an 81-46 lead into the final period.
 
The aggressiveness did not waiver as the Scarlet and Black opened the fourth on a 12-3 run. A-State outscored Mississippi Valley State 33-8 to close the game with a 60-point margin of victory.
 
The Red Wolves converted seven three pointers in the quarter, including a triple from Montue at the 3:54 mark to set the team record for threes in a game.
 
It was the second-most points scored in a game in program history, falling 10 short of the record set against Lamar on February 12, 1998. A-State scored 100-plus points in back-to-back games for the first time ever.
 
The last time the Scarlet and Black recorded multiple games with 100-plus points occurred during the 2000-01 season.
