NORFOLK, Va. (11/14/24) – Four players recorded double-digit kills on Thursday night for the Arkansas State volleyball team, which defeated Old Dominion 3-1 (25-17, 26-28, 25-16, 25-23) inside the ODU Volleyball Center.
A-State (23-4, 13-2 SBC) hit a blistering .357, led by 14 kills each by both Haley Glunz and Devyn Lewis, with Glunz's total being a career best. The Red Wolves' win over the Monarchs (16-10, 5-8) was their eighth in a row, the longest since an eight-match winning streak in 2018.
The Red Wolves control their own destiny in search of their first regular-season conference title since 2016 (co-champions with Coastal Carolina) and first sole league crown since 2015.
Kaitlin Whitlock served three of A-State's nine aces, while Glunz and Sarah Martinez served two each.
Glunz hit .500 with just two errors on 24 attacks and a pair of blocks, while Lewis had a .407 mark on 27 swings. Daedrianna Cail added 12 kills on a .455 clip and Grace Wiley hit .360 on 11 kills while knocking down a team-high four blocks.
Martinez corralled a match-high 22 digs, while Whitlock had 16 digs to accompany nine kills.
A-State got off to a blazing start in the first set, hitting .351 and relied on a pair of 4-0 runs to pull away from the hosts to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
ODU took the first four points of the second set, and battled back from a 17-11 deficit to pull even at 18. The Monarchs saved three set points to send the frame into extra points, then scored three straight to level the match at a set apiece.
The Red Wolves surged ahead 7-3 early in the third set, forcing a timeout on an ace by Whitlock. A-State's lead grew to 21-13 on a block by Cail and Wiley before winning the set 25-16 to lead 2-1.
After ODU took a 3-2 lead early in the fourth set, the Scarlet and Black took command and would not trail the remainder of the match, using an 8-2 run capped by a Valeria Ortiz ace to lead 13-6. Back-to-back kills by Lewis later made it 20-13, and then Whitlock gave A-State match point with a kill to make it 24-18. The Monarchs saved five points to keep the match alive, but an attack error sealed the 25-23 fourth-set decision.
