Red Wolves Conclude Fall State Strongly at Liberty

11/3/2024 1:50:00 PM

LYNCHBURG, Va. (11/3/24) – Three doubles wins and a pair of singles victories highlighted the final day of the fall season for Arkansas State women's tennis, competing in matches against Elon at the Liberty Hidden Dual Sunday.

The Red Wolves went unbeaten in doubles action before earning two wins in singles to close out the fall on a strong note. In total, A-State captured 13 wins in its final weekend of play - six singles and seven doubles.

A-State's No. 1 doubles pair of Anna Grigoreva and Carla Muro Castellvi defeated Elon's Miray Konar and Helen Sarikulaya 6-4. Lily Cvanciger and Abigail Thurmer battled back from down 3-0 to win six straight games to earn a 6-3 win over Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding, while Loles Carbo Chova and Sarah Millard defeated Madison Cordisco and Lisa Kranec by a score of 6-2.

"The team truly battled this weekend," Thurmer said. "Through the ups and downs, we stayed together and fought. From the start of the fall to now, the growth has been astonishing, and I cannot wait to see how much more we improve in the spring. Throughout this tournament, it is apparent that our doubles has proved to be an immensely important strength. My partner, Lily (Cvanciger), and I went down 0-3 against Elon and found back to win 6 straight games to make it 6-3. The resilience and grit this team continue to show throughout doubles and translates into singles. While the fall has officially come to an end, I cannot wait to see what we accomplish this spring. I know the team will continue to work hard and come out strong by the first match."

Both Grigoreva and Millard followed doubles play with wins on the singles courts. Grigoreva topped Bergeron in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, while Millard rallied from a set down to win 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 against Sarikulaya.

Ariadna Fernandez battled hard in her match, but ultimately dropped a close 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 decision to Ella Suk. Cvanciger lost 6-0, 7-6(3) to Heidi Bulger at No. 2 singles, while Muro Castellvi fell 6-2, 6-2 to Reding and Carbo Chova lost 7-5, 6-2 to Konar.

Arkansas State opens its 2025 spring campaign Jan. 11-12 in Tulsa, Okla., competing against LA Tech, Tulsa and Wyoming. The Red Wolves' first of seven home matches will be Jan. 17 against Missouri State, with the match being held on Trim Gym's indoor courts.
