INDIANAPOLIS (12/17/24) – Taryn Todd, who was recently named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Tuesday, was named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association's Oscar Robertson Trophy National Player of the Week list for games ending on Dec. 15.
The USBWA has expanded its national weekly honors program to now highlight five national Division I players each week in conjunction with the Oscar Robertson Trophy. Todd joins Lamont Butler (Kentucky), Tarence Guinyard (UT Martin), Jamichael Stillwell (Milwaukee) and Brice Williams (Nebraska). Todd is the first Sun Belt player to receive the honor this season.
Todd – the program's first National Player of the Week – led the Red Wolves (9-3) in scoring in wins over UT Arlington and at UAB, totaling 54 points – the fifth most scored nationally on the week. He averaged 27 points (18th NCAA) and seven rebounds, in addition to a league-leading 4.50 assist/turnover ratio. The Vaughan, Ontario, native eclipsed the 20-point mark twice while shooting 47.6 percent from the floor – 42.9 percent from 3-point range. His 20 made field goals led the conference and was third most nationally.
He opened the week with a 23-point output, combined with a career-high eight rebounds and four assists without a turnover in A-State's 83-79 victory over UTA on Dec. 12.
Then, in Sunday's historic win at UAB, Todd again took command with a game-high 31 points (22 in the second half and overtime), leading the Red Wolves to their largest comeback in school history in a 98-89 OT triumph over the Blazers. He matched his career high in points scored on a dozen made field goals while posting six rebounds and five assists, helping A-State complete what is tied for the sixth-largest comeback in Division-I history.
With Todd's help, A-State became just the sixth time to face a deficit of 25 or more at the half and still win – tied for the third-largest half-time comeback in Division-I history.
Todd enters the week third in the Sun Belt in scoring (15.8) and is second field goals made (67) on a league-most 172 attempts. His 190 points also ranks second in the conference as of Tuesday.
