A-State Overwhelmed by Late Surge from Troy, 12-5

TROY, Ala. (4/6/24) – Arkansas State baseball (16-17, 3-8 SBC) was locked in a battle with Troy (22-11, 6-5 SBC) late, but the Trojans used seven unanswered runs to down the Red Wolves 12-5 on Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.
 
Collin Maloney made his eighth start of the season, surrendering three earned runs on two hits and five walks while striking out three over 3.1 innings pitched. Three A-State batters recorded multiple hits in the contest, but Daedrick Cail led the team with two RBIs.
 
The Trojans took the lead during the second on a three-run home run from Blake Sutton before A-State responded with an RBI-single from Allen Grier in the next frame. It was the Red Wolves' first run since the eighth inning of a 6-3 win against Georgia Southern on March 30.
 
Cason Tollett cut the deficit to one after recording a sacrifice fly to center field while Cail put the Red Wolves in front with a three-run triple off the wall in left. Brooks Bryan tied the game with a triple before Treymane Cobb Jr. made the score 5-4 with a single down the right-field line.
 
Brayden Caskey led off a solo-home run to left field in the sixth, tying the game at five runs apiece. It was the Scarlet and Black's first home run since the ninth inning of a 7-4 victory at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on March 26.
 
Bryan brought in two more runs for the Trojans before Aidan Gilroy blew the game open with a grand slam. Will Butcher added one more run in the eighth inning, making the score 12-5 going into the final inning.
 
The Red Wolves were retired in order as Troy took the series with a seven-run victory. Clete Hartzog (4-2) earned the win while Hunter Draper (2-2) took the loss.
