LOUISVILLE, Ky. (6/30/24) – Rising sophomore Anna Grigoreva finished runner-up in the singles championship at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Summer Series event which took place at the University of Louisville from June 28-30. Seeded No. 27 in Flight A in the tournament, Grigoreva won four matches over the course of the three days.
"We are very happy for Anna and proud of her for this amazing accomplishment," said A-State tennis head coach Sujay Lama. "These were great results against very formidable opponents. However, we are not surprised because of her constant dedication and hard work. We're so pleased with the results and the continued elevation of the A-State tennis program."
Grigoreva opened with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Haley Klein in the round of 32. She followed that up with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Furman's Macy Hitchock and won her quarterfinal match 6-4, 6-7, 10-8 against Tess Bucher. A 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 triumph against Ellie Myers of Kentucky sent Grigoreva to the finals against Leyla Britez of Tennessee. After dropping the opening set 6-4, Grigoreva forced a third set tiebreak with a 6-4 set two victory, but Britez took the match in the tiebreak 10-2.
"It was a good tournament with worthy opponents and great competitive matches," said Grigoreva. "I felt like I was playing better every day, but today I learn and grow. It will drive me to keep staying hungry and working even harder. I hate losing, but sometimes you learn before you win. I'm still happy with my four wins on Friday and Saturday. I cannot wait for next season."
