JONESBORO, Ark. (9/19/24) – Entering its second season under head coach Sujay Lama, the Arkansas State women's tennis team is set to kick off its fall slate this weekend at the Belmont/Lipscomb Invite.
A-State is one of eight teams in the field, which includes co-hosts Belmont and Lipscomb, as well as Ball State, East Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama and Vanderbilt. The Red Wolves return four players from last season's squad (Adriadna Fernandez, Anna Grigoreva, Sarah Millard and Abigail Thurmer) and have three freshmen set to make their debuts this fall (Loles Carbo Chova, Lily Cvanciger and Carla Muro Castellvi) with another (Hanmare McAslin) joining the team in the spring.
"We cannot wait to compete and travel together as a team," Lama said. "Fall season is a time for growth – both on and off the court. We have made significant progress in practice, but now we have the opportunity to see it in a pressure situation."
The tournament begins at 4 p.m. Friday with the first two rounds of doubles play, which concludes Saturday. The singles draw will be contested Saturday and Sunday.
A-State opens with doubles against Lipscomb at 4 p.m. ahead of a second-round pairing versus either Ball State or East Tennessee State. Saturday features the final round of doubles play at 9 a.m., along with the start of the singles draw.
Also on Saturday, the Red Wolves begin singles against Lipscomb at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the second round to follow at 2 p.m. versus either Ball State or ETSU. The tournament concludes Sunday with the final rounds of singles matches.
