A-State Falls at 20th-Ranked Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (9/21/24) – Facing a top-20 opponent on the road for the second week in a row, the Arkansas State football team dropped a 52-7 to 20th-ranked Iowa State Saturday afternoon at Jack Trice Stadium.
 
A-State (2-2) could not overcome a strong offense and tough defense of the Cyclones (3-0), but forced a pair of interceptions in the contest. Iowa State went 8-for-8 in the red zone and relied on a balanced offense of 253 passing yards to 237 rushing yards.
 
Freshman Devin Spencer led the Scarlet and Black in rushing with 52 yards, while Timmy McClain tossed a fourth-quarter touchdown strike to Hunter Summers.
 
The Red Wolves had interceptions by Dontay Joyner and Websley Etienne – their second consecutive game with multiple picks. A-State has at least one interception in three straight outings, while recording multiple picks in four of the last seven contests.
 
Trevian Thomas recorded a game-high nine tackles, including five solo stops. Marvin Ham had eight tackles – 0.5 for loss. Noah Collins recorded a sack among his five stops.
 
The Cyclones scored a pair of 1-yard rushing touchdowns in the first quarter – one by Carson Hansen and another by quarterback Rocco Becht – to own a 14-0 lead after the opening period. Becht also completed 11-of-18 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Iowa State added a 31-yard field goal by Kyle Konrardy with nine minutes remaining in the half to put the score at 17-0. Later in the quarter, Becht hurled a pair of touchdown passes to Tyler Moore (10 yards) and Jayden Higgins (16 yards) to give the hosts a 31-0 halftime lead.
 
Hansen scored again on a 3-yard rush with eight minutes left in the third quarter, moving Iowa State's lead to 38-0 after three.
 
The Cyclones tacked on a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Dylan Lee with 11:54 to play, making it 45-0. A-State then ended the shutout bid with 4:53 to go when McClain found Summers for a 27-yard score.
 
Iowa State capped the scoring with 24 seconds left on an 8-yard rushing score by Aidan Flora.
 
The Red Wolves take a break in action next week before opening Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 5, hosting South Alabama. Kick-off against the Jaguars is set for 6 p.m. at Centennial Bank Stadium.
