NASHVILLE, Tenn. (9/21/24) – On a rain-shortened Saturday at the Belmont/Lipscomb Invitational, Arkansas State tennis tallied four singles victories to continue its strong start to the fall slate.
Three of the singles victories came against co-host Lipscomb, with another coming against a Belmont competitor. Two Red Wolves – Carla Muro Castellvi and Loles Carbo Chova – earned their first career singles victories.
Anna Grigoreva defeated Lipscomb's Sofiia Paladi – a 2024 first-team All-ASUN pick – 7-6(5), 3-6, 10-8 in three sets, while freshman Muro Castellvi battled back for a 4-6, 7-6(4), 10-7 three-set win over Serafima Bobrovnikova. Fellow freshman Carbo Chova earned a straight-set triumph over Kameliia Tytarenko, and Abigail Thurmer won a three-set match over Belmont's Libbie Hamilton, 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Also in singles action, Ariadna Fernandez dropped a hard-fought three-set decision to Lipscomb's Deborah Dominguez Collado by a score of 6-2, 6-7(3), 10-7. Lily Cvanciger took on Mariya Dolzhenko, losing in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, while Sarah Millard lost 6-3, 6-4 to Lipscomb's Sonya Zhylchuk.
In doubles play, Grigoreva and Lily Cvanciger dropped a 6-1 outcome to Vanderbilt's Naomi Katz and Trinetra Vijayakumar. Millard and Muro Castellvi took on Belmont's Hamilton and Anastasiya Zholdakova, dropping a 6-3 decision.
Carbo Chova and Thurmer were serving down 4-3 against the Bruin duo of Aly Getty and Hana Sokolovic, but rain halted the match, which will be finished Sunday. The tournament also concludes Sunday with the final rounds of singles action.
