CONWAY, Ark. (9/28/24) – Arkansas State women's tennis began competition at the UCA Fall Invitational on Saturday, earning several victories at the Conway Tennis Center.
The Red Wolves totaled seven singles wins and a doubles triumph, including a perfect 3-0 day from Sarah Millard. Millard battled back for a pair of three-set singles wins and teamed up with Carla Muro Castellvi for a doubles win.
Millard defeated Austin Peay's Asia Fontana 3-6, 7-5, 1-0(6) as well as Central Arkansas' Harune Shigemasu 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(7). In doubles, she and Muro Castellvi won 6-4 over UCA's Nanoka Kazama and Shigemasu.
Anna Grigoreva also won twice in singles, with wins over UCA's Vichitraporn Vimuktananda (6-2, 6-2) and Arina Sorokina of Oral Roberts (6-3, 6-4).
A-State's freshman trio of Carbo Chova, Muro Castellvi and Lily Cvanciger each went 1-1 in singles. Carbo Chova defeated Nanami Fukushima of UCA (6-0, 6-1) and dropped a tough 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(5) decision to Northwestern State's Zoi Spyrou. Muro Castellvi won in straight sets over UCA's Ting-An Chen 7-6(3), 6-3 and fell 0-6, 6-3, 1-0(7) to Maria Farina of Northwestern State. Cvanciger ousted Konomi Miyakawa of UCA 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(1) in three, while dropping a 6-1, 6-0 outcome to NSU's Honoka Umeda.
Abigail Thurmer dropped a pair of straight-set decisions to UCA's Seohyun Park (6-3, 6-4) and Elena Thiel of Austin Peay (6-2, 6-1), while Ariadna Fernandez fell 6-2, 7-6(6) to Austin Peay's Yu-Hua Cheng.
Also in doubles play, Carbo Chova and Thurmer dropped a 6-2 decision to Pika Doberlet and Maria Farina from Northwestern State. Cvanciger and Grigoreva also paired up, falling 7-5 to Sophia Baranov and Denise Torrealba of Austin Peay.
A-State concludes action in Conway on Sunday with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles competition.
