CONWAY, Ark. (9/29/24) – Arkansas State women's tennis concluded play at the UCA Invitational on Sunday, picking up four singles wins and two doubles victories at the Conway Tennis Center.
Every player won at least one singles match on the weekend, with junior Sarah Millard going 3-0. She topped Oral Roberts' Ava Goodell in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to cap her perfect weekend in singles.
"This weekend our Red Wolves Tennis family endured another great opportunity for growth and competitiveness," Millard said. "Fight and heart were not a deficiency this weekend, as we reached 13 wins along with a few learning opportunities. Although we believe that our potential was not maximized, notably in doubles, we now see an area for improvement that can help us reach our goals at Regionals in Memphis!"
Also in singles, Abigail Thurmer won a 6-3, 6-4 match against ORU's Annelise Deer, while Loles Carbo Chova won 6-4, 6-4 over Pauline Bruns of Austin Peay. Ariadna Fernandez also won, defeating Austin Peay's Ayden Kujawa 6-3, 7-5.
Anna Grigoreva dropped a tough 7-5, 1-6, 1-0(3) decision to APSU's Denise Torrealba, while Lily Cvanciger and Carla Muro Castellvi also dropped 6-3, 6-3, and 6-2, 6-3 outcomes to Sophia Baranov and Luca Bohlen of Austin Peay, respectively.
In doubles, Carbo Chova and Muro Castellvi won 6-4 over ORU's Annelise Deer and Abby Wise, and Cvanciger and Grigoreva teamed up to beat Zoi Spyrou and Honoka Umeda of Northwestern State 6-3.
Millard and Muro Castellvi also teamed up in doubles, dropping a 6-3 match to Ava Goodell and Arina Sorokina of Oral Roberts. Millard and Thurmer faced Austin Peay's pair of Yu-Hua Cheng and Asia Fontana, falling 6-1. Fernandez and Thurmer dropped a 6-3 decision to APSU's Luca Bohlen and Pauline Bruns, while Cvanciger and Grigoreva lost 6-2 to Konomi Miyakawa and Vichitraporn Vimuktananda of host Central Arkansas.
A-State returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Memphis, Tenn., at the ITA Central Regional Championships.
