A-State Rolls Past Louisiana, 62-49

LAFAYETTE, La. (1/23/25) – Arkansas State women's basketball (11-7, 7-1 SBC) took the lead early and did not yield the rest of the way, taking down Louisiana (8-9, 4-4 SBC) 62-49 on Thursday night at the Cajundome.

Wynter Rogers recorded her first double-double on the season and the third of her career with 11 points and a team-leading 11 rebounds. Kennedie Montue led the way in points with 16 while Zyion Shannon (10) also reached double-digits.

As a team, A-State shot 22-for-54 (40.7 percent) from the floor and 10-for-28 (35.7 percent) from beyond the arc, improving to 10-0 when making 10-plus three-pointers. Defensively, the Red Wolves limited Louisiana to one triple and a 32.2 percent (19-for-59) clip from the field.

In addition, the Scarlet and Black swiped 16 steals and forced 24 turnovers, turning those totals into 16 points.

For the second consecutive game, A-State held their opponents to single digits in the opening quarter, but the Ragin' Cajuns were able to hold the Red Wolves to the same total. Louisiana jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, limiting the Scarlet and Black to one basket over the first 5:25.

Rogers broke the cold stretch with a layup while Mimi McCollister and Shannon added four to the scoreboard as both sides went into the second tied at 8-8.

Montue opened the next period with a triple while Kyanna Morgan countered the Ragin' Cajuns response with another. It was the beginning of a 10-0 run for A-State, making the score 21-11 with 6:21 to go.

Louisiana began to close the gap following a layup and three free throws, but a contested jumper from Rogers pushed the lead to six before a buzzer-beating three from Crislyn Rose gave the Scarlet and Black a 29-18 advantage at the break.

A-State shot 11-for-26 (42.3 percent) from the floor and 5-for-13 (38.5 percent) from deep in the first half while holding their opponents to 6-of-26 (23.1 percent) shooting from the field and one three pointer.

Anna Griffin drained her first three-pointer of the contest to start the third quarter while both sides converted three-point plays to keep the lead at 14 with 6:57 to go. After surrendering another three-point play, Rogers sparked a quick 7-0 run with a layup to open the first 20-point lead of the evening.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored two of the final three points on free throws, but the Scarlet and Black took a 47-28 lead into the final quarter.

Louisiana took control early in the fourth quarter, scoring eight points over the first five minutes and cutting the lead to 11. Montue provided a crucial three-pointer to end the scoreless stretch, but five minutes remained as the score stood at 50-36.

The lead swelled back to 18 points thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Montue and Shannon, allowing the Red Wolves to cruise to a season sweep of the state of Louisiana.

The Scarlet and Black did not allow 20-plus points in a quarter since allowing 20 in the second quarter at ULM on Jan. 11. The 13-quarter streak was snapped in the fourth when the Ragin' Cajuns netted 21.
