JONESBORO, Ark. (2/15/25) – Arkansas State women's basketball (17-8, 13-1 SBC) faced multiple comeback attempts from Texas State (10-15, 4-10 SBC), but thwarted all of them en route to a 72-62 victory on Saturday afternoon at First National Bank Arena.
All 10 Red Wolves scored a basket while
Zyion Shannon (16) and
Kennedie Montue (11) reached double figures. Montue also brought down 12 rebounds, securing the first double-double of her career.
As a team, A-State shot 24-for-61 (39.3 percent) from the floor, 9-for-29 (31.0 percent) from three-point range, and 15-for-19 (78.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
A-State jumped out to a 10-point advantage in the opening five minutes before a defensive stalemate ensued. Seven Red Wolves scored in the first while the Bobcats were limited to a 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) clip from the floor, resulting in a 20-11 advantage at the first buzzer.
Texas State opened the second with a pair of layups before the Scarlet and Black responded with six of the next eight points, pushing the lead back to nine. Both sides exchanged shots from that point, but A-State put scored the final three points to take a 32-23 lead into halftime.
The Red Wolves shot 11-for-28 (39.3 percent) from the floor and 2-for-15 (13.3 percent) from three-point range in the first half.
The Bobcats netted 14 of the first 21 points to start the third and closed the gap to two points with 4:42 to go. With the score at 42-39, Shannon landed a three-pointer and immediately turned a steal into points, pushing the lead back to eight.
Shannon landed another three-pointer at the 1:26 mark while
Mimi McCollister ended the period with free throws as A-State took a seven-point advantage into the final quarter.
Texas State made another push in the fourth, going on a 9-0 run spanning 2:30 to make the score 56-54 with 4:45 to go. The Red Wolves tightened up on defense beyond that point and held the opponent scoreless for 2:08.
Montue and Shannon drained a pair of threes over that span to make the score 62-54. The advantage grew to double digits and peaked at 12 points with 25 seconds to go, as the Red Wolves ended their final home game with a 72-62 victory.
