HATTIESBURG, Miss. (2/26/25) – Arkansas State women's basketball (18-10, 14-3 SBC) fell behind in the final minute against Southern Miss (9-20, 4-13 SBC), but a last-second three-pointer from
Kennedie Montue was enough to secure a 56-55 victory on Wednesday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
Montue was the only Red Wolf to reach double digits, scoring 14 points on 5-for-11 (45.4 percent) shooting from the floor and 4-for-10 (40 percent) shooting from deep. As a team, A-State shot 20-for-62 (32.3 percent) from the field and 13-for-41 (31.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Scarlet and Black jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first seven minutes of action behind four threes and a layup. The Golden Eagles added a layup and free throw in the final three minutes of the opening period, but the lead grew to 19-7 by the buzzer.
Both teams exchanged shots early in the second, but a 7-0 run for Southern Miss cut the lead to single digits with 2:26 remaining. The Red Wolves responded with nine of the final 12 points, ending the first half with a 35-21 advantage.
Momentum shifted after the 7:00 mark of the third quarter, as Southern Miss opened a 10-3 run and cut the deficit to seven. A three-point basket from
Bella Weary pushed the lead back to 10 going into the final quarter, but the Golden Eagles' resistance grew stronger in the final 10 minutes.
The Red Wolves were limited to six points over the first 9:56 of the fourth, while the opposition tallied 18 points highlighted by four threes to claim their first lead with 0:25 left. However, Montue found an open shot and netted her second career game-winning basket to secure a crucial victory.
The win ensures A-State will place no lower than the third seed at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Red Wolves can clinch the second seed with a Troy loss.
