A-State Falls in Pitching Duel at Southern Miss, 2-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (5/2/25) – Pitching dominated the series opener between Arkansas State baseball (23-22, 11-11 SBC) and Southern Miss (33-13, 16-6 SBC), but a walk-off home run made the difference in 2-1 defeat on Friday night at Pete Taylor Park.
 
Gavin Galy made his fifth start of the season, limiting the Golden Eagles to one earned run on three hits while striking out four over 4.0 innings pitched. Jack Nelson entered in relief, striking out six and retiring all 11 batters faced in 3.2 innings thrown.
 
The pitching staff recorded 10-plus strikeouts for the fourth consecutive game and the 15th time in 2025.
 
At the plate, the Scarlet and Black out-hit the opposition 5-4 and Patrick Engskov accounted for the lone run with a solo-homer in the second. Southern Miss responded in the next inning with a single to right field before both sides settled into a stalemate.
 
The teams went hitless after the fourth inning, with the Red Wolves being retired in order the rest of the way. For Southern Miss, 12 consecutive batters were retired before a leadoff home run ended the game in the ninth.
 
Colby Allen (5-4) earned the win while Jelle van der Lelie (3-3) took the loss.
