A-State Rallies to Defeat Georgia State in Conference Opener, 3-2

JONESBORO, Ark. (9/26/25) – Arkansas State volleyball (8-4, 1-0 SBC) rallied after dropping two of the first three sets at Georgia State (9-3, 0-1 SBC), winning the final two en route to a 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-14, 15-12) victory on Friday night at the GSU Sports Arena.

Daedrianna Cail led the team with 19 kills on a .500 hitting percentage plus eight digs and seven blocks. Kaitlin Whitlock tallied her fourth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs, surpassing the 1,000 career points milestone in the process.

As a team, A-State tallied 61 kills on a .216 percentage alongside 65 digs and 15 blocks.

The Scarlet and Black jumped out to a 6-1 advantage before the opposition countered by claiming 12 of the next 18 rallies. Kills from Whitlock and Haley Glunz paired with an attack error pushed the Red Wolves ahead 17-16 while two more kills from the former maintained the one-point advantage.

A-State surrendered five of the next six rallies to fall behind 23-21 and split the final four as the opening set went to the Panthers.

An attack error followed by a kill from Glunz created a 10-6 advantage for the Scarlet and Black, but Georgia State cut into the lead before a 4-0 run tied the set at 13-13. Both sides traded 3-0 runs before exchanging the next four rallies as the contest remained tied.

A kill from Whitlock paired with a service ace from Mia Maloney opened a two-point advantage that A-State maintained before taking three of the final four rallies to even the match at 1-1.

Maloney landed another ace to cap a 5-0 run at the beginning of the third set, but the offensive surge faded as the Panthers used a 7-0 run to put the Red Wolves behind 16-11. The deficit grew to six before a 4-0 run made the score 22-20, but service and attack errors ended hopes of a rally as Georgia State claimed a three-point decision in the third set.

A-State used a 6-0 scoring run to move ahead 11-7 and continued to build on the lead. Kills from Whitlock and Addison Collum paired with an attack error expanded the advantage to eight before the Red Wolves pulled away with an 11-point margin to force a fifth set.

Block assists from Glunz and Whitlock resulted in a 10-4 advantage for A-State, but Georgia State responded with a 4-0 run. Both sides exchanged the next two rallies before Payton Van Veen landed a kill while Maloney notched her fourth ace of the contest to push the advantage to four.

Three of the next four rallies went to the opposition, but Cail ended the match with a kill as the Red Wolves extend their winning streak to five.
