CHANDLER, Ariz. (9/8/25) – Opening its 2025-26 season, the Arkansas State men's golf team is third among 12 teams at the Whirlwind Invitational with a 36-hole total of 29-under par 547.
The Red Wolves opened the day with an 18-under par 270, tied for the second lowest round in program history and followed it up with an 11-under par 277. A-State's 36-hole total of 29-under par 547 ranks fourth best in program history and best since a 541 at the 2023 Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate. A-State trails host USC by six strokes and second-place UTEP by one. New Mexico State (-19), James Madison (-19), Eastern Michigan (-12), UT Arlington (-10), Stetson (-10), Georgia State (-5) and San Francisco (-5) round out the top 10.
Senior Thomas Schmidt paced A-State with back-to-back rounds of 4-under par 68. Schmidt stands tied for fifth individually, five strokes back of Jose Antonio Safa of USC for the lead. Jack Bucahan (USC), Dylan Teeter (UTEP) and Luke Stock (USC) are tied for second at 9-under par. Schmidt registers his 63rd and 64th par or better round inching closer to Zan Luka Stirn's program record of 75. With 12 birdies on the card Monday, Schmidt has 413 for his career, one shy of Tanner Napier (2014-18) for the third-most in program history.
Junior Milan Reed is tied for eighth individually at 7-under par 137, one stroke shy of his career-best 36-hole total. Reed had an eagle in the first round on the par-5 17th and added eight birdies against three bogeys on the day. Senior Chris Somerfield and sophomore Jake Wallis are among five players tied for 12th at 6-under par 138. Somerfield had back-to-back rounds of 3-under par while Wallis was a team-best 7-under par in the first round, the ninth-lowest round in program history. Jake Lile is tied for 25th at 3-under par 141 (70-71) while Viggo Hed (+2) is tied for 49th.
