JONESBORO, Ark. (5/3/26) – Arkansas State (27-19, 11-13 SBC) took an early lead but was unable to stave off Old Dominion (24-23, 11-13 SBC) in the 4-5 series finale Sunday afternoon in Norfolk at Ellmer Family Baseball Complex.
The Red Wolves were active early, taking advantage of a host of free passes throughout the early innings.
Ashton Quiller scored first after a leadoff single put him on the base path in the opening frame. A-State added a pair of runs in the second inning, one scoring on a sac bunt from
Raul Torres, the other a sac fly from Quiller.
ODU got on the scoreboard with a sacrifice flyout of their own in the third, with both teams scoring a run in the fourth inning. The Red Wolves chased out the Monarchs starter entering the fourth, scoring on a sac bunt from
Joey McLaughlin III. Old Dominion put runners on, scoring one with a single before ending the fourth, A-State up 4-2. Starter
Dylan Farley's day ended after 4.0 innings, striking out two while allowing two runs and five hits.
The Red Wolves called in lefthander
Jack Nelson from the pen, who went to work for the next 2.0 innings, allowing no hits or runs while striking out three.
ODU added two runs in the eighth by leading off the inning with a pair of runners, scoring them with a sac bunt and single to the outfield.
A leadoff single by Torres in the top of the ninth gave promise, but he was left stranded at third to enter the bottom of the inning. A one-out walk for the Monarchs represented the winning run, when they bunted him over to scoring position and scored him on a single dropping into shallow center field.
