Thomas Schmidt carded a 5-under par 67 to lead Arkansas State men's golf to a 1-under par 287 in the second round at the NCAA Championships at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
Behind Schmidt's stellar round, the Red wolves are 17th among 30 teams entering the third round of stroke play. The top 15 teams after stroke play, and nine individuals not on those advancing teams, move on to a fourth and final round of stroke play Monday with the top eight teams advancing to match play on Tuesday. An individual national champion will be awarded Monday.
Schmidt climbed 26 spots to a tie for ninth with a 36-hole total of 5-under par 139. After posting two bogeys and a pair of birdies on his first nine holes of the day, Schmidt birdied five of nine on the front nine for the 5-under par 67, his 17th round in the 60s this season. Schmidt was among seven players to go 5-under or better in the second round and one of 11 such rounds covering the first two rounds. Schmidt is five strokes back of Filip Jakubcik of Arizona (-10) for the individual lead while William Jennings of Alabama and Malan Potgieter of Louisiana are each at 8-under par. Connor Williams (Arizona State), Josiah Gilbert (Auburn) and Jon Ed Steed (Vanderbilt) are 7-under while Will Hartman (Vanderbilt) and Jackson Koivun (Auburn) are 6-under par.
Jake Wallis and
Cole Kirby each turned in 1-over par 73s for the Red Wolves Saturday. Wallis stands tied for 65th overall at 2-over par 146 while Kirby is tied for 126th with a total of 8-over par 152.
Milan Reed has totaled 4-over par 148 (74-74) to tie for 88th and
Jake Lile is 7-over par 151 (76-75) to tie for 116th.
No. 1 Auburn leads the field at 20-under par 556 with No. 3 Texas (-12), No. 11 Vanderbilt (-12), No. 30 UCLA (-7) and No. 5 Oklahoma State (-7) completing the top five. No. 29 Duke (-4), No. 4 Virginia (-4), No. 12 Arizona (-4), No. 14 Pepperdine (-1) and No. 10 North Carolina (-1) comprise the top 10 with No. 16 Oklahoma (E), No. 42 San Diego (+1), No. 15 Stanford (+1), Chattanooga (+3) and Tennessee (+3) occupying the top 15.
A-State (+6) will be paired with No. 2 Florida (+5) and No. 7 Georgia (+23) for the third round Sunday while No. 13 Arizona State (+8), No. 6 Arkansas (+10) and No. 22 BYU (+10) complete the top 20 and ties. No. 20 Texas A&M (+12), No. 33 Louisville (+14), No. 40 Purdue (+15), No. 37 Mississippi State (+16), Memphis (+18), No. 7 LSU (+20), No. 9 Ole Miss (+20), No. 28 USC (+21) and No. 26 Florida State (+23) complete the 30-team rankings.
Kirby will occupy the first tee time for A-State on Sunday with an 11:50 a.m. (PT) off the first tee. Lile (12:01 p.m.), Reed (12:12 p.m.), Wallis (12:23 p.m.) and Schmidt (12:34 p.m.) complete the tee times, all listed in pacific time.
