It’s hard to think that Mike McCarty has been on the coaching staff for only two seasons. He fit ASU’s football program like a glove immediately. After serving as the offensive coordinator at Stony Brook University in New York for three seasons, McCarty was named as Arkansas State University’s new receivers coach January 20, 2004. McCarty had served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Stony Brook since 2001. Prior to that, he was in the same capacity at Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, La., for three seasons. Roberts said that McCarty’s extensive experience as an offensive coordinator makes him a proven success. McCarty has also coached receivers at Troy State University, a program which became a part of the Sun Belt Conference in 2005, and Southeast Missouri State. He became acquainted with current ASU assistant Tony Gilbert while at SEMO. He has also worked with the programs at Illinois State, Hofstra, Oregon Tech and West Texas A&M. During his tenure at Hofstra, the Flying Dutchmen were ranked third nationally in rushing, fifth in total offense and eighth in passing in 1995. Hofstra averaged over 40 points per game that year. McCarty, a native of Oregon, began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Ore-gon from 1988-90. In 1989, the team competed in the Indepen-dence Bowl. McCarty, who played wide receiver at Oregon, graduated from Portland State in 1988 with a bachelor of science degree in history. His father, a coach for over 40 years, is still coaching high school football in Oregon. Married to his high school sweetheart for 16 years, McCarty and wife Kim have two children—daughter Macy Ann (14) and son Beau (11).
