JONESBORO, Ark.?Arkansas State had three male and four female golfers selected to the Sun Belt Conference's All-Time Golf Teams as part of the continuation of the league celebrating its 30th anniversary.
On the men's side, David Faught, Brian McCann and Zoltan Veress were selected to the team of 32 golfers voted on by the league institutions. The women were represented by Amanda Beeler, Rebecca Sarjeant, Rachael Stewart and Kristine Worden on the 30-person squad.
Faught, McCann and Veress all played together on the 1996-97 team that became the first golf squad in ASU history to participate in the NCAA Regionals. Those golfers started a streak where the team participated in the NCAA Regionals four times in six years.
Faught (1994-97) was a four-time SBC Medalist and All-Conference performer while at ASU. He finished in the top-five of the league in stroke average his final three seasons at ASU and compiled an impressive 29 top-10 finishes during his career.
McCann (1994-97) was a three-time All-SBC pick and played all four years on the same team as Faught. McCann finished among the top-10 in stroke average among SBC golfers his last two seasons and produced 17 top-10 finishes.
Veress (1996-99) was a two-time All-SBC performer and is still the only player at ASU to participate in the NCAA Regionals during all four years of competition, twice with the team and two more times as an individual. Three times Veress landed among the top-10 in league stroke average and produced 21 top-10 finishes during his career.
The Lady Indians first played golf in 1992-93 and quickly established a winning tradition, thanks in large part to the efforts of Rachael Stewart (1994-97). A four-time All-SBC performer, Stewart finished among the top-10 in league stroke average all four years and posted 22 top-10 finishes during her career, still tied for the school record for the women's team.
Sarjeant (1996-99) ended was a three-time All-SBC pick during her four years at ASU. Twice she finished among the top-five in the SBC Championships and produced 18 top-10 tournament finishes.
Beeler (1998-01) was a three-time All-SBC player and was a driving force behind ASU's only conference title in women's golf, in 2000. Beeler capped her career with a trip to the NCAA Regionals and wrapped up her four years at ASU with 22 top-10 finishes, tying her with Stewart for the most in school history.
Worden (1998-01) was a two-time All-SBC pick and paired with Beeler to lead the charge to ASU's conference crown in 2000. While at ASU, Worden produced 10 top-10 finishes.
The SBC voters were also asked to select the league's top male and female golfers and coaches of all-time. Current PGA Tour member Heath Slocum (three time All-American)(South Alabama) was selected as the top male golfer in league history and long-time Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Bob Bass was picked as the top male coach in league history.
On the women's side, New Mexico State's and current LPGA star Alena Sharp (three time honorable-mention All-American) was selected as the top women's golfer and Denver's Sammie Chergo, who started the UD program from scratch, was picked as the league's best women's coach of all-time.
