ASU Mourns Passing of Football Great Richie Woit

JONESBORO (6/5/07) ?  The Arkansas State University family mourned the loss of one of their all-time great football players with the passing Saturday, June 2, of Richard “Dick” Woit, a four-year letterman with the Indians football team from 1950-53 who was inducted into the ASU Athletic Hall of Honor in 1989.

Mr. Woit was a resident of Chicago and was 76 years of age.  Funeral services were held Monday, June 4.  Despite playing for ASU over five decades ago, Woit still holds the all-time school records for rushing yards (3,947) and touchdowns scored (57).  He was an AP First Team All-America selection and also named to the Williamson All-America selection in 1953.  He was also an AP Honorable Mention All-America choice in 1951 and 1952.

“Without a doubt, Richie was one of the most outstanding football athletes ASU has ever had and he carried the banner of ASU for over 50 years,” said Director of Indian Club Planned Giving and former ASU running back and assistant football coach Bill Templeton.  “I am proud that he was a part of the Indian family.”

During his four-year career at ASU, Woit led the Indians to a combined 32-8-2 record and four bowl games.  He was named the MVP of the Refrigerator Bowl in 1951 and also played in another Refrigerator Bowl game and two Tangerine Bowl games.  He is a member of the All-Time Arkansas State Football Team, which includes players from 1909-1975.

Following his stellar collegiate football career, Woit was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 25th round of the 1954 draft.  He played for the Lions in 1955.
