ASU Soccer Falls To Oral Roberts In First Round Of Tulsa Challenge

TULSA, OKLA. ? Freshman forward Sofia Turesson scored two goals in the first 14 minutes of play, but the Arkansas State soccer team (3-2) couldn't hold onto the lead, eventually falling to Oral Roberts (2-2), 3-2, in the first round of the Tulsa Challenge Friday night.

“I was very happy with the way that we started the game especially with our defensive pressure which created the two goals,” said head coach Derek Pittman. “But we showed that we are still very immature mentally at times. We had a mental lapse in the end of the first half which gave up the three goals.”

Turesson scored an unassisted goal in the ninth minute (8:10), when she intercepted a pass from the Golden Eagles defense and won the one-on-one with ORU's goalkeeper Amanda Wheeler.

Tuesson then played the ball to senior forward Markie McRae, who passed it back to junior defender Amy Koss who sent the ball back to Turesson. Turesson then faced her second one-on-one with Wheeler, scoring ASU's second goal in the 14th minute (13:29).

ORU's Tara Lomas scored two goals, including the game winner, and assisted on the third goal to lift the Golden Eagles in the win. Lomas' game winner came on a free kick in the 42nd minute (41:17).

“Obviously you have to give ORU credit, although we went up 2-0 they fought back and finished their chances in the latter part of the first half to take the lead and we struggled to come back from that,” said Pittman.

Arkansas State had to play a player down in the final 23 minutes and 34 seconds due to junior defender Mary Geels receiving a red card in the 67th minute (66:26).

“We have to rebound and learn to be more mature in making better decisions in key moments of the games, so that we don't give up so many goals,” concluded Pittman.

Freshmen goalkeepers Sara Krimm and Megan Stoltzfus split time in goal for ASU. Krimm started the match making eight saves while giving up three goals. Stoltzfus played the second half, making three saves.

The Red Wolves continue action in the Tulsa Challenge  on Sunday facing tournament host Tulsa at 1 p.m.
