ASU Drops Series Finale To Austin Peay

JONESBORO (3/13/11) – Austin Peay got its bats going scoring nine combined runs in the fourth and seventh innings on 13 hits to win the series finale against the Arkansas State baseball team, 9-2, Sunday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.

ASU snapped a four game winning streak to fall to 8-9 on the year while APSU improved to 8-6. ASU won the first two games of the series to take a 2-1 win in the series.

ASU picked up a run in the first inning when Ryan Emery singled to left field to drive in Todd Baumgartner, giving ASU a 1-0 run.

Austin Peay then used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead, 4-1. The Red Wolves got within one run when Tyler Smith doubled to lead off the inning and scored when Zach Maggio hit into a sacrifice.

The Governors then racked up five more runs in the seventh inning outhitting the Red Wolves 13-8 in the contest.

“We had opportunities early in the game to help ourselves out which didn't happen and then we hurt ourselves, couldn't make a play or couldn't get the third out in the fourth inning and ultimately that was kind of a bug-a-boo for us,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “Give credit to their pitcher, I think he did a very good job, pitched 111 pitches or so. They did a good job adding on and kind of put the dagger in us in the seventh and we just could not play catch up from there.”

The Red Wolves stranded 11 runners on base during the game while Austin Peay was able to drive in all but six base runners.

Zach George went 2-2 to led ASU while Baumgartner and Emery each also recorded two runs for the Red Wolves.

Brad Allen took the loss for ASU, his first of the season working four innings allowing four runs which were all unearned while striking out four batters. Jeremy Dobbs took the win for APSU improving to 3-0 on the season, striking out six Red Wolves batters.

ASU will play Tennessee-Martin on Wednesday completing its season-long home stand before opening Sun Belt play at UALR on Friday.
