ASU Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Louisiana-Lafayette

JONESBORO (3/27/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team won the first half of its Sunday doubleheader against Louisiana-Lafayette 11-7 with the Ragin' Cajuns winning the second half of the twin bill 10-4 at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field

With the split, the Red Wolves moved to 12-13 with a 2-4 league mark while ULL moved to 12-11 with a 3-3 Sun Belt Conference record. With the win in the second half of the double-header ULL was able to capture the series 2-1 over the Red Wolves.

In game one, the Red Wolves out hit ULL 15-10 and scored three runs in the fourth and eighth innings while putting up two runs in the sixth and scoring one run in each of the second, fifth and seventh frames.

“It was positive obviously offensively we did a good job and got some quality at bats,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “It was pleasing to see, pleasing to close that out and get 27 outs and add on (runs).”

ASU got on the board in the second when Zach George reached on an error by the ULL second baseman which plated Anthony Hecht.

The Ragin' Cajuns took their only lead of the game, scoring two runs in the fourth inning but their lead was short lived as the Red Wolves scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead which they never relinquished.

Michael Faulkner singled up the middle to drive in Logan Uxa before George singled through the right side which scored Faulkner and Hecht, putting ASU back on top, 4-2 in the fourth.

In the fifth, Uxa tripled to center field which scored Tyler Smith, giving ASU a 5-2 advantage and stretched its lead to 6-3 when Jordan Castaldo doubled-in Faulkner and Ryan Emery drove in Castaldo.

ULL mounted a comeback when Mike Patello hit a three RBI home run in the seventh which tied the contest at 6-all in the seventh. The Red Wolves got back on top when Todd Baumgartner drove in Faulkner on a two-out RBI single to third.

The Red Wolves then scored three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Faulkner drove in two when he singled to left field and George drove in one when he singled through the right side.

Faukner went 4-4 from the plate with three runs scored and three RBI to lead the Red Wolves. George went 3-5 with four RBI. Baumgartner and Uxa each had two hits for ASU.

Starting pitcher Jacob Lee went six innings to pick up the win on the hill for the Red Wolves. Lee struck out six while allowing five runs on seven hits, which were all earned improving to 202. Sam Jew pitched three innings in relief to pick up his first save of the season.

In the second-half of the twin bill ULL scored three runs in the first and third innings to jump out to a 6-0 start and never looked back picking up a 10-4 win over the Red Wolves.

The Red Wolves were only outhit 16-12 but stranded 10 runners on base to the Ragin' Cajuns six.

The Red Wolves scored runs in the sixth seventh and eighth innings on RBIs from Emery, Castaldo and Zach Maggio.

Starter Brad Allen went three innings giving up six runs on nine hits to take the loss for the Red Wolves. Allen struck out nine of 17 batters faced.

Emery and Hecht led the Red Wolves at the plate in the second game each notching two hits including a triple for Hecht.

John Koch, Andres Caceres and Brandon Farley pitched the final three innings for the Red Wolves each throwing 1.0 innings in relief while not giving up an earned run in the final three frames.

“Any time you can score six runs in the first three innings you have a great chance to win a ball game,” added Raffo. “Their pitcher was outstanding and they got some double-play balls and by the seventh inning it was hard to come back.”

The Red Wolves return to action on Tuesday when they travel to SIU-Edwardsville for a two-game midweek series against the Cougars. First pitch against SIUE is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
