JONESBORO (9/25/11) - Brian Davis, a sophomore on the Arkansas State football team, was named the College Football Performance Awards' National Placekicker of the Week after breaking a pair of school and Sun Belt records during the Red Wolves' game against Central Arkansas last Saturday.
Davis set a new Sun Belt Conference and ASU record when he booted six field goals in the Red Wolves' 53-24 win over the Bears. His 23 points scored was also an SBC and ASU record for points scored in a single game by a kicker.
Davis did not miss on the night, connecting on field goals of 24, 32, 33, 34, 21 and 33 yards, and was 5-of-5 on extra point attempts. Both his six field goals and 23 points were the most by a kicker in the nation this season, and he was just one field goal and one point shy of tying the NCAA records as well.
His six field goals broke the previous school record that was held by Scott Roper with five against North Texas in 1986. Roper scored 19 points in the game against North Texas, which was also the previous school record for points by kicking.
The former Sun Belt record for field goals made was five as well, held by Dennis Hopovac of North Texas and Dustin Rivest of Florida International. The league record for points scored by kicking in a game was held by Jeremy Knott, also of North Texas, with 19 points against Western Kentucky in 2009.
Davis has now made 8-of-10 field goals on the season and is a perfect 12-of-12 on extra point attempts. He leads A-State in scoring among all players and is ranked tied for first in the Sun Belt Conference in scoring by kick with 9.0 points per game. Davis' 2.0 field goals made per game places him tied for sixth in the nation.
