JONESBORO, Ark. (9/26/2011) —
Following his record-setting performance in Arkansas State's 53-24 victory over
Central Arkansas Saturday, sophomore placekicker Brian Davis (Brentwood, Tenn.)
has been named Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, the league
announced Monday morning.
He was also named as the College
Football Performance Awards' National Placekicker of the Week, the CFPA
announced Sunday.
Davis set new Sun Belt Conference
and ASU records when he was perfect on six field goals and five extra-point
attempts against the Bears. His six field goals made were an ASU and Sun
Belt Conference record and his 23 points scored in the game was also an SBC and
ASU record for points scored in a single game by a kicker. Davis did not
miss on the night, connecting on field goals of 24, 32, 33, 34, 21 and 33
yards, and was 5-of-5 on extra point attempts. Both his six field goals
and 23 points were the most by a kicker in the nation this season, and he was
just one field goal and one point shy of tying the NCAA records as well.
Davis' six field goals broke the ASU
record of five set by Scott Roper against North Texas in 1986 and the SBC
record of five held by Dennis Hopovac of North Texas and Dustin Rivest of
FIU. Roper also scored 19 points against North Texas to set the previous
ASU record and Jeremy Knott of North Texas set the previous league scoring mark
when he put up 19 points against Western Kentucky in 2009.
Davis has now made 8-of-10 field
goals on the season and is a perfect 12-of-12 on extra point attempts. He
leads A-State in scoring among all players and is ranked tied for first in the
Sun Belt Conference in scoring by kick with 9.0 points per game. Davis'
2.0 field goals made per game places him tied for sixth in the nation.
Davis and the Red Wolves will open
Sun Belt Conference play Saturday when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky. for a
3:00 p.m. matchup against the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. The game
will be televised by the Sun Belt Network.
