5-3 Setback to SIUE Snaps A-State Baseball?s Four-Game Winning Streak

JONESBORO (3/6/12) - The Arkansas State baseball team (7-5) had its four-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night, suffering a 5-3 setback to SIU Edwardsville (6-5) at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field in non-conference action.

The Red Wolves gave up a run in each of the first two innings and three in the fourth, falling behind 5-0.  SIUE recorded six of their nine hits over the first four innings and starting pitcher Drew Staples exited the game with a no-hitter for the Cougars after 4.1 innings of work.

The Red Wolves left the bases loaded in the third inning and stranded six men total over the first four innings, unable to record a hit until pinch hitter Collin Massanelli posted a 2-RBI single in the fifth inning.  A-State scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning with its first run coming off a bases loaded walk issued to Alex Potts that brought home Michael Faulkner.

ASU managed just two other hits the rest of the night, including one in the eighth inning by Anthony Hect and the last in the ninth when Michael Faulkner recorded an infield single.  The Red Wolves had three players hit by a pitch a combined four times and were issued six walks, but left 11 men on base during the course of the game.

"They were better than us early in the game and we couldn't counter that, so that's where they won the ball game and you have to give them credit," said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo.  "We had some good at-bats, but we just weren't able to string them together consecutively.  I thought our guys kept working and we had a couple of good at-bats in the fifth inning that really helped us get back in it."

SIUE finished the game with nine hits, all posted over the first seven innings as Tyler Winfield and Brandon Farley pitched a perfect eighth and ninth inning, respectively.

ASU will wrap up its two-game midweek series against SIUE at Tomlinson Stadium tomorrow at 3 p.m.
