A-State Leads the Way in 1960s Southland Conference All-Decade Team

JONESBORO, Ark. (6/5/13) – The Southland Conference has announced its All-Decade baseball team from the 1960s as a part of its 50th Anniversary commemoration and eight former Arkansas State baseball players were selected to the squad, the most of any team from that era.

William Bourg, Bob Browning, Jim Callaway, George Glenn, Jim Mueller, Wayne Pitcock, Dana Ryan and Bob Webb represented A-State on the team.

A total of 29 student-athletes makeup the 1960s All-Decade Team, including honorees from each of the five institutions that made up the league during its first six years. The all-decade team includes student-athletes from Arkansas State, Abilene Christian and Trinity, Lamar and Texas-Arlington.

Bourg was the first four-time, first-team all-conference selection, earning honors from 1967-70 and was selected as the conference's pitcher of the year in 1970. Bourg held the career strikeout record at ASU for over 40 years until Jacob Lee broke the mark in 2012. He was also selected the NCAA District VI All-Region team in 1968 and holds career records for victories (25) and complete games (29) at A-State. He played professionally and was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 28th round of the 1970 MLB draft.

Browning, Callaway and Mueller were each three-time All-Southland Conference selections. Browning was also a NCAA District VI All-Region team selection in 1967 and has the most assists in a single game in ASU history with eight. Callaway was a NCAA District VI All-Region selection in 1967 and 1968 and is featured on the “Legacy Walk” around Tomlinson Stadium. Mueller was also on the 1967 NCAA District VI-All Region team.

Pitcock, Ryan and Glenn are three of five A-State baseball players to achieve All-America status. Ryan received the honor in 1967 and Pitcock in 1968 and both were NCAA District VI All-Region selections in each of their All-America seasons. Both played professionally with Ryan being selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 25th round of the 1968 draft, while Pitcock was a 13th round selection in the 1969 draft selection process.

Gleen was three-time All-America selection from 1964-66 and was also an NCAA District VI All-Region pick in 1964. He finished the 1966 season with a .395 batting average, which is the fourth highest in school history.

Webb was a standout catcher for the Red Wolves from 1963-66 and earned Southland All-Conference honors in his senior season.

Bourg, Callaway, Mueller, Pitcock and Ryan also played on the 1967 Arkansas State baseball team that advanced the NCAA College Division playoffs and the 1968 NCAA College Division World Series team in 1968. Browning was a member of the 1967 team as well.
