Outdoor Track Rankings Contain Both A-State Teams

NEW ORLEANS, La. (5/6/14) – The fifth installment of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Team Computer Rankings for the 2014 outdoor season was released this Tuesday (May 6) and both Arkansas State University teams are among the top 100.

The A-State women's team is ranked 47th nationally of 199 teams this week while the men's squad occupies the 91st-place position among the 188-ranked team field.  The Red Wolves registered a 43.16 team points total in women's competition and an 18.03 score for the men.  Florida presently holds down the nation's top placing in the computer rankings for both women and men.  The Gators have accumulated first-place totals of 380.68 for the women and 328.41 on the men's side.

Arkansas State, under head coach Jim Patchell, slid down one placing this week into 14th with a 137.53 score in the 15-team South Central Region rankings through action of May 5.  Texas A&M (848.32 score) maintained its South Central Region top placing on the women's side and Arkansas (861.42 score) moved up two placings this week into first place in men's competition.

The national team rankings are compiled by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons.  The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index showcasing the teams who have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race.  Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championship team points.  The USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings shouldn't be referred to as a “poll” as no voting occurs during the process.

A-State returns to action after being idle this past weekend as the Red Wolves begin their quest for a conference title in the 2014 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend (May 9-11) at the Texas State University Track and Field Complex in San Marcos, Texas.
