ATLANTA, Ga. (3/7/15) — The Arkansas State women's tennis team fell to Georgia Southern 5-2 Saturday afternoon in a Sun Belt Conference tilt.
The Red Wolves began the day when the No. 2 doubles pairing of Tamara Slijepcevic and Sabina Jeresic defeated the Eagles' Francisca Norregaard and Daria Vasekina 8-3, but failed to record wins in the other two matches to drop the doubles point and fall behind 1-0 going into singles competition.
Slijepcevic earned a straight set 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jordana Klein in the No. 1 pairing to even the match at 1-1, and Julie Gauguery downed Mary Phillips Smith 7-5, 3-6, 14-10 to give A-State a 2-1 edge after the first two matches, but A-State would not be as fortunate in the final four matches.
Victoria Pisani dropped a thrilling 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 decision in the No. 3 match to even things up and Jess Heep-Eriksen fell to Guilia Riepe 6-3, 6-2 to give the Eagles the lead. Georgia Southern clinched the victory when Daria Vasekina downed Sabina Jeresic 6-3, 6-3. Daria Iurchenko rounded out the day for A-State with 6-1, 7-5 loss to Francisca Norregaard in the day's final match.
A-State returns to action Sunday afternoon with a match at Kennesaw State that is scheduled for an 11 a.m. first serve.
