A-State Tennis Falters; Gauguery Wins Third Straight

RICHMOND, Ky. (2/18/17) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Eastern Kentucky to conclude its two-match road swing through the state of Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Wolves were competitive in the doubles' point and captured a one point victory in the No. 1 pairing thanks to the play of Julie Gauguery and Shannon O'Brien. The senior/freshman pairing defeated the Colonels Laura Argente and Raquel Montalvo 7-6.

A-State battled tough in the other two matches but failed to capture the doubles' point in two close losses. Sabina Jeresic and Victoria Pisani lost to Viktorija Demcenkova and Sagung Putri Dwinta 6-4, while Allison Quammen and Troi Roberts fell to Marina Marti and Kristina Lagoda 6-3.

In singles' competition Julie Gauguery won her third straight match of the season with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Argente in the No. 1 match. Gauguery is now 4-1 on the season, with her only loss coming against a ranked opponent from Ole Miss.

“We played well in the doubles' match, but came up short and could not find a way to win four singles' matches,” A-State head coach Kel Lange said. “Julie remains to be a bright spot for us and is playing some of her best tennis in both singles and doubles matches.”

In other singles' matches O'Brien was defeated by Lagoda 6-1, 6-0, while Pisani lost to Dwinta 6-1, 6-0. Eastern Kentucky clinched the match when Demcenkova defeated Jeresic 6-4, 6-4.

In the other two singles' matches, Tori Roberts lost to Marina Marti 6-2, 6-0 and Quammen was defeated by Margaux Lacroix 4-6, 6-0, 10-3.

The Red Wolves return to the courts on Saturday, Feb. 25 with a road match against Samford in Birmingham, Ala., with first serve set for Noon.
