TROY, Ala. (10/13/23) – Arkansas State volleyball served six aces, but Troy relied on a .340 attack percentage to defeat the Red Wolves 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 26-24) Friday inside Trojan Arena.
A-State (11-8, 1-6 SBC) held set point in the third set, but the Trojans (9-8, 7-0) took three straight points to clinch the sweep.
Yazmyn Billings and Ilayda Dincer led the Red Wolves with seven kills each, while Sarah Martinez recorded eight digs. Dincer hit a team-best .312, committing just two errors on 16 attacks.
Three players recorded double-digit kills for the hosts, led by Julia Brooks' 17 kills on 24 swings (.667), while hitting .340 as a team.
Troy led by as much as four in the opening set before A-State pulled within a point on an ace by Libby Gee-Weiler to make it 20-19. The Trojans then took five of the last six points to lead 1-0 in the contest. That momentum carried into the second set, in which Troy did not trail, to make it a two-set advantage for the Trojans.
A-State came out of the set break and surged to an early 3-0 lead aided by two of Bailey Helzer's three service aces. After Troy reclaimed a 15-13 lead, the Scarlet and Black moved ahead 23-19 following another Helzer ace. Troy then tied it at 23 with a 4-0 run before an attack error gave the Red Wolves an opportunity to take the set and extend the match. Troy then took three straight points, clinching the match on a Brooks kill.
