JONESBORO, Ark. (10/27/23) – Texas State amassed 17 blocks on Friday night, as the Arkansas State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-13, 25-16) decision to the Bobcats inside First National Bank Arena.
Middle blocker Jade Defraeye accounted for eight denials to lead the Bobcats (15-7, 8-3 SBC), while Tegan Seyring led A-State (12-11, 2-9) with a match-high 13 kills.
Kaitlin Whitlock registered her team-leading 10th double-double of the season, tallying 10 kills and 14 digs. Whitlock and Mia Maloney tied for the team lead in digs. Haley Glunz added seven kills and a team-high four blocks.
The Red Wolves took the first three points of the match, but the Bobcats later took momentum with a 4-0 run that put them ahead 12-9 following an ace by Maggie Walsh. Texas State expanded its lead to as much as seven before A-State rallied to within three after a kill by Ilayda Dincer. Samantha Wunsch later clinch the set with a kill to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the contest.
In the second frame, A-State overcame a six-point deficit to lead 20-17 after a Whitlock ace. Texas State then reclaimed the lead and was two points shy of taking a two-set lead at 23-21, but the Scarlet and Black claimed five of the next six points to even the match at a set apiece with a set victory in extra points.
Texas State regained momentum in the third set, in which it never trailed to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
A-State owned an early three-point lead in the fourth set after a kill by Valeria Ortiz, but Texas State overtook the Red Wolves with a 7-1 run that put the count at 12-7. After A-State cut the margin back to two, the Bobcats grew their lead back out to nine before clinching the match on a kill by KJ Johnson, who led Texas State with nine kills.
