JONESBORO, Ark. (10/13/24) – In a back-and-forth affair, Arkansas State women's soccer (3-4-4, 0-3-2 SBC) used a late goal to force a tie against Southern Miss (1-6-4, 0-2-4 SBC) on Sunday afternoon at the A-State Soccer Complex.
The Golden Eagles outshot A-State 14-10 and held the upper hand in corner kicks while the Red Wolves claimed the advantage in saves (4-2).
Keelyn Peacock and
Emma Riley led the team with two goals, with the former also recording a team-high four shots.
Both teams missed nine combined shots in the first half, but a penalty kick in the 43rd minute allowed Southern Miss to claim a 1-0 advantage.
Peacock used a header on a corner kick from
Sarah Strong to tie the game in the 55th minute. The midfielder has four goals on the season, which is the most since
Darby Stotts (6) and
Aliyah Williamson (4) led the team in 2022.
Adaira Nakano capitalized on an opportunity 13 minutes later for the Golden Eagles, landing a shot in the lower right corner to make the score 2-1. With under 12 minutes remaining, an assist from
Emma Riales allowed Riley to tie the game once again for the Scarlet and Black.
Each team took one shot in the final 10 minutes of action, but neither were on target as the match ended in a draw.
With five regular season games remaining, A-State has tied the school record for most draws in a season. The Red Wolves established the current record in 2019 and matched it in 2023.
