Rose-Powered Red Wolves Down Arizona State in Thriller, 100-96

TEMPE, Ariz. (11/8/24) – Sophomore guard Crislyn Rose netted a career-high 33 points on Friday afternoon at Desert Financial Arena, powering Arkansas State women's basketball (1-1, 0-0 SBC) to a 100-96 victory over Arizona State (1-1, 0-0 SBC).

Rose was not alone as Zyion Shannon, Shaunae Brown, Bella Weary, and Kyanna Morgan all reached double figures. The last time A-State had five players produce 10 or more points occurred during a 95-15 victory over Hendrix on November 21, 2023.

As a team, the Scarlet and Black made 51.4 percent (36-for-70) of their shots, including a 13-for-30 (43.3 percent) clip from beyond the arc. The 13 triples tie for the seventh most during a game in program history.

The Red Wolves also held a 9-7 advantage in steals and tallied three blocks.

The first quarter was even between the two squads, with three ties and three lead changes occurring in the opening period. Arizona State claimed a 22-17 advantage with 2:08 remaining, but A-State cut the deficit to three going into the second.

The Sun Devils drained seven of the first nine field goals for either team to open the quarter, eventually claiming the first double-digit lead of the contest with a 41-31 advantage. The lead remained at 10 points following six made free throws for Arizona State over a 1:42 span.

The Scarlet and Black reversed momentum by applying intense pressure, resulting in three forced turnovers and an 18-4 run which included the final 10 points of the quarter. Rose accounted for half of that total as the Red Wolves took a 55-51 lead into the break.

Rose matched her career high of 15 points in the first half while Zyion Shannon tallied nine. As a team, the Red Wolves recorded seven steals and outrebounded the Sun Devils 19-15.

After falling behind by two points to open the second half, A-State responded with a 7-0 run highlighted by a three-pointer from Brown. The Sun Devils responded with an 8-0 run of their own, but back-to-back steals and layups from Weary stonewalled their offensive surge.

Another triple from Brown followed by a layup from Rose broke a 69-69 tie as the Scarlet and Black entered the final quarter ahead by five.
The Red Wolves nailed their first trio of three-pointers to start the fourth and opened their first double-digit advantage of the afternoon. A layup from Rose and a trey from Shannon made the score 90-77, the largest lead of the contest for either squad.

Arizona State began to rally at the 5:57 mark, outscoring A-State 12-1 and making the score 91-88 with 3:30 remaining in the contest.

Rose scored the next four points before a 6-0 run gave the Sun Devils their first lead since holding a 65-62 advantage with 4:09 left to go in the third.

Rose converted a critical and-one with 36.9 remaining on the clock to put A-State back in front, and after a crucial stop with less than 10 seconds remaining, she sealed the deal with two free throws to make the score 100-96.

The last time A-State defeated a Power-4 opponent was during the 2017-18 campaign, when the Red Wolves claimed a 70-69 victory at Florida.

It is also the first non-conference road win since a 102-83 victory at Murray State in 2022-23, which is the last time the Scarlet and Black scored 100 points in a game. Rose had the first 30-point performance by a Red Wolf since Izzy Higginbottom scored 33 against Old Dominion on Feb. 3.
