MARTIN, Tenn. (12/15/24) – Arkansas State women's basketball (3-5, 0-0 SBC) battled against UT Martin (2-8, 0-0 OVC) before their opponent pulled away late to seal an 82-71 defeat on Sunday afternoon at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center.
Wynter Rogers led the Red Wolves with 15 points while
Kyanna Morgan (13) and
Zyion Shannon (11) also reached double figures. As a team, A-State shot 27-for-60 (45 percent) from the floor and 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Scarlet and Black tallied 13 steals and scored 24 points off 24 turnovers from the Skyhawks.
UT Martin jumpstarted the offensive action with a layup to take a 7-5 lead at the 3:44 mark, ending a scoreless stretch of 2:06 for both teams. The Red Wolves moved ahead 10-7 off a three-pointer from
Kennedie Montue, but the Skyhawks responded with back-to-back triples.
The deficit reached five points before
Bella Weary capped a 7-2 run with a buzzer-beating three, tying the game at 19-19.
After allowing an early bucket to open the second, the Scarlet and Black kept their opponent scoreless for 4:29 and took a 24-21 lead. The Skyhawks responded with a 6-0 run, but a layup and two free throws from
Kyanna Morgan put A-State back in front.
The Red Wolves trailed by one after surrendering a layup with 1:05 remaining, but entered intermission ahead 33-29 behind five points from
Wynter Rogers.
The Scarlet and Black shot 44.4 percent (12-for-27) from the field and 40 percent (4-for-10) from three-point range in the first half, outscoring UT Martin in fast break points (13-4), points in the paint (16-14), and points off turnovers (13-10).
UT Martin closed the gap to start the second half, outscoring A-State 12-6 over the first 4:47 to tie the game at 41-41. The offensive surge continued as A-State fell behind by five with 1:20 to go, but the Red Wolves scored six of the final eight points and closed the gap to one point going into the final quarter.
A-State was outscored 17-8 over the first five minutes of the final quarter and faced their first double-digit deficit of the contest. A trio of layups from Rogers and
Kennedie Montue made it a seven-point ballgame, but the Skyhawks scored eight of the final 12 points to close the game.
