A-State Drops Contest Against Tarleton State, 78-68

JONESBORO, Ark. (12/19/24) – Arkansas State women's basketball (3-6, 0-0 SBC) fell behind early and could not recover against Tarleton State (7-6, 0-0 WAC), falling 78-68 on Thursday night at First National Bank Arena.
 
Mimi McCollister led the team with 15 points while Kyanna Morgan (14) and Anna Griffin (10) also reached double figures. Wynter Rogers led both teams with a season high 12 rebounds, the most by a Red Wolf this season.
 
As a team, A-State shot 22-for-60 (36.7 percent) from the floor, 6-for-20 (30 percent) from beyond the arc, and 18-for-27 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.
 
The Texans opened the game on a 9-0 run that turned into a 14-3 advantage midway through the first. The deficit maxed out at 17 with 1:05 remaining, with the Red Wolves trailing 24-8 at the end of the quarter.
 
Both sides exchanged shots to open the second, but Tarleton State claimed their largest lead of the game at 19 with 4:40 remaining. A three-pointer from Kennedie Montue marked a momentum shift that saw A-State score nine of the final 13 points to enter halftime behind 36-25.
 
The Scarlet and Black shot 9-for-30 (30 percent) from the field and 2-for-11 (18.2 percent) from three-point range in the first half. A-State held an 11-8 advantage in turnovers, recording six steals and scoring five points as a result.
 
A layup from Bella Weary paired with a three from Anna Griffin made the score 41-34 with 6:11 remaining in the third. The gap closed to six points before an offensive surge from Tarleton State opened it back to double digits.
 
Wynter Rogers converted a three-point play to close the quarter on a 6-0 run, making the score 55-47 going into the final period.
 
Both sides opened the fourth with seven points over the first 2:30 before the Texans went on another 9-0 run. Kyanna Morgan ended a 1:46 scoreless stretch for the Scarlet and Black at the charity stripe and scored five of the final eight points, but it would not be enough.
