JONESBORO, Ark. (12/22/24) – Arkansas State women's basketball (4-6, 0-0 SBC) closed non-conference play on a high note, taking down Delta State (8-4, 4-2 GSC) by a score of 68-45 on Sunday afternoon inside First National Bank Arena.
Kennedie Montue led the way with 15 points while
Mimi McCollister (10) and
Bella Weary (10) also reached double figures.
Wynter Rogers led the team in rebounds (7) while McCollister dished out a team-high four assists.
As a team, A-State shot 25-for-67 (37.3 percent) from the floor and 12-for-33 (36.4 percent) from beyond the arc. The Scarlet and Black outrebounded their opponent 41-38, and won the turnover battle with seven less turnovers (19-12).
The first period was a defensive battle that ended with a 13-11 score in favor of the Red Wolves. A-State opened a five-point lead with 3:08 remaining, but the Lady Statesmen tied the ballgame before a jumper from
Mimi McCollister made the difference.
After Delta State tied the game again, the Scarlet and Black went on a 10-0 run powered by a pair of triples from Montue and
Anna Griffin. The double-digit lead was erased over the next 4:45, as Delta State cut the Red Wolves' lead to 25-24.
Back-to-back three-pointers from McCollister and
Shaunae Brown created separation late as A-State took a 32-26 lead into the break.
The Scarlet and Black shot 13-for-39 (33.3 percent) from the floor and 5-for-19 (26.3 percent) from three-point range in the first half. McCollister scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 (100 percent) clip from deep.
Montue opened the second half with back-to-back triples while
Kyanna Morgan added another to create a 41-28 advantage. Both teams exchanged shots over the last three minutes of the third, with A-State taking a 14-point lead into the final period.
The Red Wolves widened the gap further in the fourth, taking their first 20-point lead of the contest with 2:35 remaining. The Lady Statesmen were unable to shrink the lead below 20 beyond that point, as A-State improved their record in non-conference finales to 3-2 over the last five seasons.
