A-State Drops Conference Opener at App State, 77-62

BOONE, N.C. (12/29/24) – Arkansas State women's basketball (4-7, 0-1 SBC) fought early, but App State (5-6, 1-0 SBC) pulled away in the second half to seal a 77-62 defeat on Sunday afternoon at the Holmes Convocation Center.
 
Kennedie Montue led the team with 21 points on 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) shooting from the floor and 4-of-8 (50 percent) shooting from deep. She also led the team with eight rebounds while Kyanna Morgan swiped a team high four steals.
 
As a team, A-State shot 22-of-61 (36.1 percent) from the field and 9-of-32 (28.1 percent) from beyond the arc. The Red Wolves forced 21 turnovers and tallied 13 steals, scoring 20 points as a result.
 
A-State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Mountaineers fought back, resulting in five lead changes before a 10-2 run put the Red Wolves behind 22-16 to end the period. Crislyn Rose netted six points in the quarter while three more Red Wolves contributed on the scoreboard.
 
Montue opened the second with a pair of threes to put the Red Wolves within a possession of tying the game. App State responded with a 6-0 run and opened their largest lead of the quarter at eight points with 5:53 to go, eventually taking a 35-29 advantage into intermission.
 
Montue scored 11 of the 13 points in the quarter, with Rose scoring the final bucket with 0:37 left in the quarter. For the first half, the Red Wolves shot 11-for-30 (36.7 percent) from the floor and 4-for-17 (23.5 percent) from three-point range.
 
The momentum fully shifted to the Mountaineers at the 6:25 mark in the third, going on a 20-4 run beyond that point. The Red Wolves went scoreless for two-or-more minutes twice during that span, resulting in a 59-39 deficit going into the fourth.
 
A-State made an early push in the fourth, but App State pushed the deficit back to 20 with 4:45 remaining. Another push in the form of an 8-2 run made the score 71-59, but it would not be enough as the Red Wolves fell by 15.
