JONESBORO, Ark. (1/15/25) – Arkansas State women's basketball (9-7, 5-1 SBC) endured a furious rally from Louisiana (8-7, 4-2 SBC), using a last-second three-pointer from
Kennedie Montue to secure a 67-65 overtime victory on Wednesday night at First National Bank Arena.
Montue and
Crislyn Rose led the team with 12 points apiece while
Anna Griffin (11) and
Kyanna Morgan (11) also reached double figures.
Wynter Rogers made an impact in the paint by earning her second-straight double-digit rebounding performance after bringing down 10 against the Ragin' Cajuns.
Shaunae Brown surpassed 200 career rebounds in the contest while
Anna Griffin fell one short of 500.
As a team, A-State shot 23-for-71 (32.4 percent) from the floor and 12-for-41 (29.3 percent) from three-point range. The 41 attempts from beyond-the-arc tie a school record for the most against a Division I opponent.
The Red Wolves used a trio of three-pointers plus a layup to claim an 11-4 advantage early in the first. The Ragin' Cajuns slowly cut into the lead from there, with A-State scoring only three points after the 6:25 mark.
The three points came in the form of a three-pointer from Griffin, allowing A-State to take a 14-10 lead into the second quarter.
The Red Wolves opened the period on a 14-4 run powered by four three-pointers to claim their first double-digit lead of the contest with 7:01 to go. The lead eventually grew to 20 following another trey from
Kyanna Morgan, but Louisiana scored the final four points of the half, closing the gap to 37-23.
The Red Wolves shot 13-for-38 (34.2 percent) from the floor and 10-for-25 (40 percent) from beyond the arc in the first half. Griffin led the way in points with nine while the team outrebounded the Ragin' Cajuns 27-14.
The momentum for Louisiana carried over into the second half, holding A-State to four points in the quarter. The Red Wolves' surrendered a 13-0 run that began at the 5:52 mark and ran through the end of the quarter, resulting in a 42-41 deficit going into the fourth.
A-State went on a 9-0 run spanning 3:42 to claim a 50-44 lead, but the Ragin' Cajuns battled back and eventually reclaimed the lead at 57-56 with 0:41 left in the contest. Rose converted one-of-two free throws to tie the game before Nubia Benedith converted a contested layup to push Louisiana ahead with 0:05 to go.
Griffin went to the charity stripe following a foul with 0:04 remaining and converted one-of-two, but a lane violation against the Ragin' Cajuns allowed Griffin to make one more and force overtime.
Rose netted four of the first five points to make the score 63-60 with 3:44 remaining, but Louisiana responded with five points stemming from a layup and three free throws. The Scarlet and Black made it back to the free-throw line, but converted only one attempt, making the score 64-63 in favor of the opponent.
A missed layup gave A-State a chance to win the game with 0:11 left to play. Rose drove to the right side before dishing the ball to Montue, who drained the game-winning three-pointer.
It was the Red Wolves' first win by two points or less since downing Texas State 54-53 on January 8, 2021 in Jonesboro. The win secures the best start to conference play since starting 18-1 in 2015-16.
