JONESBORO, Ark. (1/18/25) – Arkansas State women's basketball (10-7. 6-1 SBC) used an overwhelming defensive effort to complete the season sweep over ULM (7-11, 3-4 SBC), securing a 71-43 victory on Saturday afternoon at First National Bank Arena.
Wynter Rogers (17) and
Bella Weary (16) netted career highs in points while
Zyion Shannon also reached double digits with 13.
Mimi McCollister led the rebounding effort with a career high 10 boards and Rogers fell two shy of a double-double.
Nissa Sam-Grant put together a breakout performance, bringing down nine rebounds and posting six blocks. She fell one short of the team single-game blocks record set by Kim Davis at New Orleans during the 1999-00 campaign.
As a team, the Scarlet and Black matched a team record for blocks against a Division I opponent with 10. The only other time A-State achieved the feat was at Western Kentucky on February 10, 2010.
A-State shot 25-for-67 (37.3 percent) from the floor, 4-for-23 (17.4 percent) from three-point range, and 17-for-22 (77.3 percent) from the charity stripe.
Suffocating defense from the Red Wolves was on full display in the first, holding ULM to a 10.5 percent (2-for-19) clip from the floor and not allowing a basket after the 6:14 mark. The Scarlet and Black had five scorers in the opening quarter, resulting in a 16-5 advantage going into the second.
It was the lowest point total A-State has allowed in a quarter this season and the first time holding a team to five points or less in a quarter since November 21, 2023, versus Hendrix.
The Warhawks scored their first basket in 9:55 to break a 10-0 run, but the Scarlet and Black maintained their momentum by opening a 30-8 lead. A-State surrendered four more points before going into intermission with a 20-point advantage.
The Red Wolves set a new record for lowest first half point total against a Division I opponent inside First National Bank Arena. A-State shot 13-for-33 (39.4 percent) from the floor and 1-for-11 (9.1 percent) from three-point range.
The Scarlet and Black pushed the score to 40-16 in the third quarter before ULM's offense began to wake up. The lead shrunk to 18 on two occasions due to an 8-2 run, but A-State closed the final 2:17 of the period with eight points to enter the final quarter ahead 52-26.
A 9-0 run at the midway point of the fourth put the game out of reach as the score stood at 66-34 with 3:39 to go. The Warhawks netted a trio of three-pointers before Rogers closed the game with a layup to secure a 28-point margin of victory.
The last time A-State won by 28 points or more occurred during a 98-70 victory over ULM on January 8, 2022.
