CONWAY, S.C. (2/20/25) – Arkansas State women's basketball (17-10, 13-3 SBC) put together a strong comeback bid at Coastal Carolina (21-6, 11-5 SBC), but could not complete the effort in an 86-70 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the HTC Center.
Zyion Shannon led the Red Wolves with 21 points while
Kennedie Montue (12) and
Kyanna Morgan (10) also reached double figures. As a team, the Scarlet and Black shot 26-for-81 (32.1 percent) from the floor and 8-for-37 (21.6 percent) from three-point range.
After taking an early 2-0 advantage, A-State surrendered a 13-0 run and eventually fell behind 18-4 at the 4:44 mark before storming back with 11 of the next 15 points. Shannon (6),
Wynter Rogers (5), and Morgan (3) were the only Red Wolves to score in the quarter, trailing 24-15 going into the second.
Momentum remained in the Chanticleers' favor, upping the deficit to 13 before converting a pair of layups and triples to claim a 44-26 lead at the 3:24 mark. Shannon finished with 10 of the Scarlet and Black's 14 points and ended the period with a three to enter halftime down 49-31.
A-State shot 12-for-44 (27.3 percent) from the floor and 2-for-15 (13.3 percent) from three-point range in the first half.
The deficit peaked at 24 with 6:26 remaining in the third, but the Red Wolves began to chip away from that point. Seven of the next 11 points went to A-State before Montue and
Anna Griffin scored seven more to make the score 59-46.
Both sides exchanged shots to end the period, but Coastal Carolina entered the final quarter ahead by 14 points.
The Scarlet and Black clawed back to a single-digit deficit 1:20 into the fourth and eventually came within six points of tying the contest after a three from Morgan made the score 72-66. The Chanticleers shut down the comeback bid with a 14-4 run, sealing the Red Wolves' second consecutive defeat.
