A-State Rallies to Claim Extra-Inning Victory at Southern Illinois, 10-8 (11)

CARBONDALE, Ill. (4/15/25) – Arkansas State baseball (17-19, 7-8 SBC) fell behind by five runs early against Southern Illinois (24-12, 7-5 MVC), but rallied and held off the Salukis in a 10-8 victory over 11 innings on Tuesday night at Itchy Jones Stadium.

Collin Maloney made his eighth start of the 2025 campaign, surrendering three runs (all earned) on four hits and a walk while striking out two over 0.2 innings pitched. Nine Red Wolves entered in relief, surrendering five hits and five runs (one earned) combined.

At the plate, five Red Wolves recorded multiple hits while Wil French, Cross Jumper, and Cason Tollett tallied three RBIs apiece. A-State recorded 14 hits total while both sides evenly split four errors.

The Salukis struck in the first inning, using a leadoff walk and home run to make the score 2-0. An RBI-single extended the deficit to three runs before bases were loaded with two outs, but no more would score in the frame.

Engskov led off the second with a solo-homer to left field, tying Jake Henry Williams for the team lead in home runs this season. Jumper added another run in the third, scoring French from second base to make the score 3-2.

Southern Illinois created space on the scoreboard in the next frame, scoring four runs on one hit, two errors, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch.

The Red Wolves battled back in the top of the fourth, starting with a bases-loaded walk drawn by French. Jumper recorded another RBI-single in the next at-bat and Tollett scored two on a single through the left side to make the score 7-6.

The lead changed hands in the top of the sixth when French and Tollett batted in a pair of runs. The former reached on a fielding error while the latter tallied a third RBI on his second hit, pushing the score to 8-7.

A-State held the opposition scoreless for five innings, but with two runners in scoring position and one out in the ninth, the Salukis tied the game on a sacrifice fly. No more runs would score in the bottom frame, forcing extra innings.

A walk and two singles loaded the bases in the 11th before French broke the tie on a single to left-center. Jumper reached on a fielder's choice and Raul Torres scored in the next at-bat, resulting in a 10-8 advantage.

The Salukis were unable to mount a response, allowing the Red Wolves to walk away with their first extra-inning victory of the season. Brett Foss (1-0) earned the win while Dylan Petrey (4-3) took the loss.

The victory marks A-State's first victory at Itchy Jones Stadium since a 4-3 (10) decision on March 28, 2017.
