FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (9/19/25) – Arkansas State volleyball (6-4, 0-0 SBC) improved to 2-0 at the Razorback Invitational, defeating Southern Illinois (4-7, 0-0 SBC) 3-1 (29-27, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15) on Friday night at Barnhill Arena.
Daedrianna Cail recorded her second career double-double and first of the season, posting 11 kills on a .429 hitting percentage along with 10 total blocks.
Devyn Lewis led the team with 13 kills while
Addison Collum recorded 12 and Payton Van Veen finished with 10.
As a team, the Red Wolves hit .204 on 60 kills, posting 58 assists and 63 digs alongside a season-high 16 blocks.
After block assists from Van Veen and
Haley Glunz tied the first set at 9-9, the Salukis secured 11 of the next 16 rallies to claim a 20-14 advantage. A-State chipped away at the deficit, coming within three points of tying the set before a kill for the opposition made the score 24-20.
Back-to-back attack errors paired with block assists from Cail and Lewis put the Scarlet and Black within one before another attack error plus a kill from Collum pushed A-State in front. Both sides split the next two rallies before Southern Illinois regained the advantage, but a 3-0 run bookended by kills from Collum and Van Veen secured the opening set.
Kills from
Erin Madigan and
Kaitlin Whitlock sparked the Red Wolves to an early 5-2 lead in the second set, but Southern Illinois erased it with a 3-0 run. A-State responded by claiming seven of the next 10 rallies to open a four-point gap.
The momentum remained in A-State's favor, recording three kills and two blocks during a 6-1 run to close the second set via a 25-17 decision.
Both sides evenly split the first 24 rallies of the third set before the Salukis opened a three-point advantage. The Red Wolves battled back to force a 20-20 tie, but a 5-2 run for the opposition ended hopes of a sweep.
Kills from Collum and Cail sparked a 4-0 run to open the fourth set, but Southern Illinois closed the gap to one. The Red Wolves responded by winning eight of the next 11 rallies to move ahead 14-8, and the lead eventually grew to seven.
Ahead 20-13, Van Veen recorded back-to-back kills and Whitlock added another to put the contest out of reach. After Southern Illinois broke the 3-0 run, Cail and Collum recorded two kills to end the match.
