JONESBORO, Ark. (4/11/26) – Arkansas State (20-14, 6-8 SBC) put a runner in scoring position in seven of the nine innings in the 4-3 loss to No. 11 Coastal Carolina (26-8, 13-1 SBC), unable to match the Chanticleer's ninth-inning run Saturday evening in front of a record crowd of 2,112 fans at Tomlinson Stadium-Slayton Family Field.
The Chanticleers led off the game with a double that bounced over the wall, then scored the runner on a single to the outfield. The Red Wolves matched the ground-rule double Coastal struck with one from
Cason Campbell, but was unable to send him around home.
A trio of singles in the top of the third inning allowed for a sac fly for Coastal before
Ashton Quiller ended the inning on a double play, throwing out a tag-up from second base. A leadoff walk from
Joey McLaughlin III set up a double to left-center to bring the score 2-1 after the first three innings.
A-State evened the score in the fourth by way of an opposite-field single from
Lane Walton, scoring Patrick Engksov.
Both squads traded runs in the fifth, CCU knocking an RBI-single, and A-State taking advantage of Quiller on the base path. Quiller led off the inning by legging out a ball to short, then advanced on a wild pitch to second.
Evan Griffis replaced Quiller at second with a double over the rightfielder's head, allowing Quiller to touch home.
Over the next three innings both teams threatened with runners, neither side getting farther than second base.
Coastal broke the tie in the ninth inning, leading off with a double, then bunting the runner over just 90 feet from home. A single dropped into shallow centerfield gave Coastal the winning run, with A-State unable to find the answer in the bottom of the frame.
