JONESBORO (5/2/11) - Arkansas State head men's golf coach Steve Johnson announced Monday that Germany native Christian Pitz has signed a National Letter of Intent to play with the Red Wolves next season.
The Biessenhofen, Bavaria native carried a 74.4 scoring average in 2009 and a 74.6 average in 2010.
"We are very excited to have Christian become part of our program," said Johnson. "He's a very talented player and has one of the best golf swings I've seen in my time as a collegiate coach. Being exceptionally long off the tee, he will bring a lot to the table upon his arrival. He is an outstanding student as well and therefore should be an overall asset to our program."
He recently earned medalist honors at the Rational Champions Trophy, shooting a course-record 67 at the Bad Woerishofen golf course during the tournament. Competing on the same course, he claimed first place at the local championships and at the Trave Trophy, where he posted a low round of 68. He shot a 71-75-72 for his three rounds at the local championships.
Pitz shot a low round of 72 on the Chieming golf course while competing on the state championship team. He finished third individually at the state championships held on the Weickershof golf course, where he shot a low round and course-record 68.
He attended Gymnasium Marktoberdorf, where he competed in volleyball, basketball, track and field, soccer and swimming in addition to golf. He also played in the first German division for the Golf Club Augsburg.
Pitz joins Cape Town, South Africa native Christian Helmbold to complete the Red Wolves 2010-11 signing class. Helmbold signed with ASU during the fall semester.
