JONESBORO, Ark. (10/7/08) ? Four Arkansas State players posted
double-digit kills as the Red Wolves (15-4) earned their fifth consecutive
victory with a 3-1 win over the Memphis Tigers (12-7) Tuesday night in non-conference
volleyball action at the ASU Convocation Center.
Sophomore outside hitter Kristen Catalane had a double-double for
Arkansas State, finishing the night with 11 kills and 16 digs. Junior outside hitter Konae Purcell added 15
kills, senior outside hitter Mafo Joelle added 12 kills and freshman middle
blocker Cayla Fielder came up big for the Red Wolves with 10 kills and eight
blocks.
Arkansas State edged the Tigers 25-23 in the first game before
Memphis came back to even the match with a 25-18 decision in set two. The Red Wolves took set three 25-20, then
closed out the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth.
“I'm pleased,” said ASU Head Coach Craig Cummings. “It was going to take a strong effort against
Memphis with the way they have been playing this season. They have been playing very well...for our team
to play as hard as they did, to weather some storms like they did in game two,
then come back out in game three and change their mindset, I'm very proud of
them.”
After tying the match with the 25-18 win in set two, Memphis built
an 18-16 lead in the third set before the Red Wolves took advantage of a Tiger
error and a kill from Joelle to even the count at 18-18. The two teams traded points before Arkansas
State won six of the final seven points to go up 2-1 in the match.
Memphis led again midway through the fourth set, but ASU erased a
14-11 Tiger advantage by reeling off five straight to go up 16-14. Arkansas State stretched its lead to 19-16 on
a pair of kills from Purcell, but Memphis used back-to-back kills from Emily
Underwood and a kill from Lauren Thompson to knot the score at 19-19. ASU answered with a kill from Catalane, then
took advantage of a Tiger error to go up 21-19.
Kills from Fielder and junior Heather Bowman, and a block from Fielder
and Purcell gave ASU three match points, and Fielder hammered home the final
kill to give the Red Wolves the win.
Arkansas State will continue a three-match home stand Friday night
when the Red Wolves host Sun Belt rival Middle Tennessee in a 7:00 p.m. match
at the ASU Convocation Center. The Red
Wolves will wrap up the week with a SBC matchup against Western Kentucky
Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
