ASU Soccer Drops Final Nonconference Match To Southeastern Louisiana

JONESBORO, Ark. (9/21/08) ? Southeastern Louisiana (4-1-1) spoiled the ASU soccer team's Senior Day by downing the Red Wolves (3-4), 4-0, Sunday at the ASU Soccer Complex. Sunday's match was the last non-conference game for Arkansas State.

ASU's best scoring chances came from freshman forward Sofia Turesson. Turesson took three total shots, two of which were on goal, the last of which was in the 85th minute (84:58) to an open net, which came up just wide.

Senior midfielder Bernadette Dierker also recorded three shots for the Red Wolves, while sophomore defender Miranda Wiley had two shots for ASU.

Southeastern Louisiana scored its first goal in the 13th minute (12:12) when Anna Fry took a pass from Natalie Santana and took a shot from the right side of the box to the near post, giving the Lady Lions, a 1-0 advantage.

Kyle MacIntosh gave Southeastern Louisiana a 2-0 advantage when she took a shot from the top of the box off a long pass from Shalayne Heffner in the 24th minute (23:11).

Maghan Krawczyk added another tally for the Lady Lions in the 30th minute (29:11) unassisted off a deflected pass.
In the 88th minute (87:58), after ASU had pushed more numbers forward, Kristin McDonald scored Southeastern Louisiana's final goal from the top of the box to the far post.

The Red Wolves outshot the Lady Lions, 11-7, with each team taking seven shots on goal. ASU took six shots in the second half.

“I think we have come out a little flat and a little slow in the last four games,” said head coach Derek Pittman. “We just have to find a way to solve that, we can't always rely on being a second-half team.”

“We came out strong in the second half,” said senior Chelsea Hopkins. “We can't let this loss get us down, we just have to get ready for next week.”

Lacy Bockhaus made seven saves in goal for the Lady Lions, while Sara Krimm made three saves in goal for the Red Wolves.

“Their goalkeeper played fantastic, she came up with some big time saves,” said Pittman.  “We can't let that get us down, if she saves it one time we have to pepper them with more shots and figure out a way to score more goals. I am extremely happy with our player's second half effort. The effort that we showed flying in with tackles and getting stuffed in, driving for every inch and clawing for every opportunity, we have to play that way every minute of every game.”

Prior to the match Arkansas State honored five of its team members in a Senior Day celebration.  Senior players Bernadette

Dierker, Katherine Krekeler, Markie McRae and Chelsea Hopkins were honored along with senior team manager Jillian Williams.

Arkansas State will open conference action on the road next weekend. The Red Wolves play South Alabama on Friday at 7 p.m. and then travel to Troy for a Sunday match at 1 p.m.
